Happy Michaelmas!

Today is the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. I hope you are celebrating with gusto. Here’s a stunning offering: Healey Willan plays “Ye watchers and ye holy ones” and then improvises a postlude.

Yes, this is often an All Saints hymn. I couldn’t find good renditions of any Michaelmas favorites on youtube, or you’d have heard something else.

  1. I was confirmed into the Anglican Church on Michaelmas 2007. I have had a soft spot for St Michael ever since. And with the reading being the last part of the first chapter of John’s Gospel, it makes it an all round great day.

  2. Bob Chapman says:

Apparently Willan had no trouble associating this hymn with Michaelmas. (Listen to the end.)

  3. Had a spot of Healey Willan for my (Bp) ordination in Westminster Abbey in 2003. Amazing stuff, though I’d score higher for chromatic sense than gusto, perhaps… thanks for reminder
