    You know, in my first parish (in a tiny rural town) all Christian clergy in town got together and approached all the (few) merchants in town. We said, “If you don’t decorate your store during Advent, we’ll give you a big sign for your window saying, ‘We’re keeping Advent’ (in big purple letters) and we’ll advertise your shop in our weekly church bulletins for free.”

    About half actually took us up on it — and discovered they had saved the cost of decorations, and had ample sales before Christmas!

    Note: There was no Walmart in town!
