Thomas,

Thanks for your comment. I think perhaps either I wasn't clear, or I'm missing your comment.

I think this stuff is important. We need to discuss it and even fight over it. However, I think we can't let this issue (or any other issue) be our focus and mission. When we talk about this, it needs to be in the context of Christian hope and love. We need to avoid the opposite, which is to talk about Jesus in the context of human rights.

So I agree with you that if our only answer is "this isn't worth fighting over" we'll be failing ourselves and others. But we have to have a compelling moral vision for which we are know. Christians should be known as loving, merciful, just, and hopeful. Not as vicious and anti- anything.

Does that make any more sense? Or are we agreeing in different words?

Pax,
Scott

i'm going to venture a guess that those folks who list "anti-homosexual" first think that anti-homosexual is a bad thing.

and from that, we should be wary of "hey, this isn't a big issue" talk. the middle loves that talk, because it avoids dealing with the hard difficult facts.

one of those facts is that anti-homosexual turns into dead homosexuals on the street. it turns into people denied medical care, or access to their spouse in the ER. when people list "anti-homosexual", it's because they think the most important thing they know about the church is that it is doing this horrible thing, and they want none of it.

saying, "hey, this isn't worth serious fighting over" is no better to those people. remember, they think that "anti-homosexual" is bad, and they think it's bad because they think it's vicious, uncivil, even hateful. telling them, "this isn't worth fighting over" isn't going to cut it.
